Ancient Greek Gnathian Skiphos
ca.370-360 B.C. Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Eastern Apulia, Gnathia
A fine Greek Gnathian skyphos, with a deep bowl, two horizontal handles and a low base. The vessel, decorated in the typical Gnathian style using the colours red, white and yellow over the top of a glossy, black background. The obverse side features a stylised vine pattern consisting of grapes, leaves, and tendrils with multiple bands of geometric and floral motifs above.
The reverse displays a simple frame of two bands with circular motifs either side completing the design. This type of drinking vessel was used at banquets or drinking parties called symposium.
