Gandharan Buddha’s Hands.
ca. 100-300 A.D. Ancient Region of Gandhara (Modern day Pakistan and Afghanistan)
A grey schist fragment from a larger statue of two holding hands. The position of the hands suggests one of the many Buddha’s Mudras, the symbolic hand gestures of the Buddhist tradition. In this case, he would have been revealing the dharma, the ‘way’ of his teaching.
This statue would have sat in front of a stupa – a domed structure that enclosed the Buddha’s ashes.
