Gandharan Frieze with Buddha
ca.100-300 A.D. Ancient Region of Gandhara(Present day Pakistan and Afghanistan)
A superb grey schist frieze fragment, finely carved with Buddha, standing in the centre, wearing the heavy sanghati with cascading naturalistic folds; his right arm raised in Abhaya mudra, his graceful ovoid face with his hair exquisitely incised in wavy, almost symmetrical, waves pulled over the ushnisha.
Flanked by two attendants, both depicted with elaborate headdresses, holding robes and offerings. The scene is framed by two carved Corinthian columns. A beautiful example of Western influences in Gandharan art.
Very Good Condition, intact. Size: H:150mm / W:254mm ; 3600g
