Rare Gandharan Panel with Garuda Vanquishing the Naga Clan

ca. 100-300 A.D. Ancient Region of Gandhara(Present day Pakistan and Afghanistan)

A museum-quality carved figure, depicting the “Garuda’a abduction of Queen Kakati”.

This is one of the many “Jakatas”, Buddhist tales about the former lives of the Buddha. In this story, he was born as the king of Benares and ruled with his beloved queen, Kakati. The royal solar bird Garuda came to the court disguised as a man and gambled with the king. He then became enamored of the queen and abducted her. A similar example is currently held at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
